89 A well-written song 1 by Ethan the Ezrachite.
I will sing continually 2 about the Lord’s faithful deeds;
to future generations I will proclaim your faithfulness. 3
2 For I say, “Loyal love is permanently established; 4
in the skies you set up your faithfulness.” 5
3 The Lord said, 6
“I have made a covenant with my chosen one;
I have made a promise on oath to David, my servant:
4 ‘I will give you an eternal dynasty 7
and establish your throne throughout future generations.’” 8 (Selah)
5 O Lord, the heavens 9 praise your amazing deeds,
as well as your faithfulness in the angelic assembly. 10
6 For who in the skies can compare to the Lord?
Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings, 11
7 a God who is honored 12 in the great angelic assembly, 13
and more awesome than 14 all who surround him?
8 O Lord, sovereign God! 15
Who is strong like you, O Lord?
Your faithfulness surrounds you.
9 You rule over the proud sea. 16
When its waves surge, 17 you calm them.
10 You crushed the Proud One 18 and killed it; 19
with your strong arm you scattered your enemies.
11 The heavens belong to you, as does the earth.
You made the world and all it contains. 20
12 You created the north and the south.
Tabor and Hermon 21 rejoice in your name.
13 Your arm is powerful,
your hand strong,
your right hand 22 victorious. 23
14 Equity and justice are the foundation of your throne. 24
Loyal love and faithfulness characterize your rule. 25
15 How blessed are the people who worship you! 26
O Lord, they experience your favor. 27
16 They rejoice in your name all day long,
and are vindicated 28 by your justice.
17 For you give them splendor and strength. 29
By your favor we are victorious. 30
18 For our shield 31 belongs to the Lord,
our king to the Holy One of Israel. 32
19 Then you 33 spoke through a vision to your faithful followers 34 and said:
“I have energized a warrior; 35
I have raised up a young man 36 from the people.
20 I have discovered David, my servant.
With my holy oil I have anointed him as king. 37
21 My hand will support him, 38
and my arm will strengthen him.
22 No enemy will be able to exact tribute 39 from him; 40
a violent oppressor will not be able to humiliate him. 41
23 I will crush his enemies before him;
I will strike down those who hate him.
24 He will experience my faithfulness and loyal love, 42
and by my name he will win victories. 43
25 I will place his hand over the sea,
his right hand over the rivers. 44
26 He will call out to me,
‘You are my father, 45 my God, and the protector who delivers me.’ 46
27 I will appoint him to be my firstborn son, 47
the most exalted of the earth’s kings.
28 I will always extend my loyal love to him,
and my covenant with him is secure. 48
29 I will give him an eternal dynasty, 49
and make his throne as enduring as the skies above. 50
30 If his sons reject my law
and disobey my regulations,
31 if they break 51 my rules
and do not keep my commandments,
32 I will punish their rebellion by beating them with a club, 52
their sin by inflicting them with bruises. 53
33 But I will not remove 54 my loyal love from him,
nor be unfaithful to my promise. 55
34 I will not break 56 my covenant
or go back on what I promised. 57
35 Once and for all I have vowed by my own holiness,
I will never deceive 58 David.
36 His dynasty will last forever. 59
His throne will endure before me, like the sun, 60
37 it will remain stable, like the moon, 61
his throne will endure like the skies.” 62 (Selah)
38 But you have spurned 63 and rejected him;
you are angry with your chosen king. 64
39 You have repudiated 65 your covenant with your servant; 66
you have thrown his crown to the ground. 67
40 You have broken down all his 68 walls;
you have made his strongholds a heap of ruins.
41 All who pass by 69 have robbed him;
he has become an object of disdain to his neighbors.
42 You have allowed his adversaries to be victorious, 70
and all his enemies to rejoice.
43 You turn back 71 his sword from the adversary, 72
and have not sustained him in battle. 73
44 You have brought to an end his splendor, 74
and have knocked 75 his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short his youth, 76
and have covered him with shame. (Selah)
46 How long, O Lord, will this last?
Will you remain hidden forever? 77
Will your anger continue to burn like fire?
47 Take note of my brief lifespan! 78
Why do you make all people so mortal? 79
48 No man can live on without experiencing death,
or deliver his life from the power of Sheol. 80 (Selah)
49 Where are your earlier faithful deeds, 81 O Lord, 82
the ones performed in accordance with your reliable oath to David? 83
50 Take note, O Lord, 84 of the way your servants are taunted, 85
and of how I must bear so many insults from people! 86
51 Your enemies, O Lord, hurl insults;
they insult your chosen king as they dog his footsteps. 87 52 88
The Lord deserves praise 89 forevermore!
We agree! We agree! 90
90 A prayer of Moses, the man of God.
O Lord, you have been our protector 1 through all generations!
2 Even before the mountains came into existence, 2
or you brought the world into being, 3
you were the eternal God. 4
3 You make mankind return 5 to the dust, 6
and say, “Return, O people!”
4 Yes, 7 in your eyes a thousand years
are like yesterday that quickly passes,
or like one of the divisions of the nighttime. 8
5 You bring their lives to an end and they “fall asleep.” 9
In the morning they are like the grass that sprouts up;
6 in the morning it glistens 10 and sprouts up;
at evening time it withers 11 and dries up.
7 Yes, 12 we are consumed by your anger;
we are terrified by your wrath.
8 You are aware of our sins; 13
you even know about our hidden sins. 14
9 Yes, 15 throughout all our days we experience your raging fury; 16
the years of our lives pass quickly, like a sigh. 17
10 The days of our lives add up to seventy years, 18
or eighty, if one is especially strong. 19
But even one’s best years are marred by trouble and oppression. 20
Yes, 21 they pass quickly 22 and we fly away. 23
11 Who can really fathom the intensity of your anger? 24
Your raging fury causes people to fear you. 25
12 So teach us to consider our mortality, 26
so that we might live wisely. 27
13 Turn back toward us, O Lord!
How long must this suffering last? 28
Have pity on your servants! 29
14 Satisfy us in the morning 30 with your loyal love!
Then we will shout for joy and be happy 31 all our days!
15 Make us happy in proportion to the days you have afflicted us,
in proportion to the years we have experienced 32 trouble!
16 May your servants see your work! 33
May their sons see your majesty! 34
17 May our sovereign God extend his favor to us! 35
Make our endeavors successful!
Yes, make them successful! 36
91 As for you, the one who lives 1 in the shelter of the sovereign One, 2
and resides in the protective shadow 3 of the mighty king 4 –
2 I say this about the Lord, my shelter and my stronghold,
my God in whom I trust –
3 he will certainly rescue you from the snare of the hunter 5
and from the destructive plague.
4 He will shelter you 6 with his wings; 7
you will find safety under his wings.
His faithfulness is like a shield or a protective wall. 8
5 You need not fear the terrors of the night, 9
the arrow that flies by day,
6 the plague that comes in the darkness,
or the disease that comes at noon. 10
7 Though a thousand may fall beside you,
and a multitude on your right side,
it 11 will not reach you.
8 Certainly you will see it with your very own eyes –
you will see the wicked paid back. 12
9 For you have taken refuge in the Lord,
my shelter, the sovereign One. 13
10 No harm will overtake 14 you;
no illness 15 will come near your home. 16
11 For he will order his angels 17
to protect you in all you do. 18
12 They will lift you up in their hands,
so you will not slip and fall on a stone. 19
13 You will subdue 20 a lion and a snake; 21
you will trample underfoot a young lion and a serpent.
14 The Lord says, 22
“Because he is devoted to me, I will deliver him;
I will protect him 23 because he is loyal to me. 24
15 When he calls out to me, I will answer him.
I will be with him when he is in trouble;
I will rescue him and bring him honor.
16 I will satisfy him with long life, 25
and will let him see my salvation.
