70 For the music director; by David; written to get God’s attention. 1
O God, please be willing to rescue me! 2
O Lord, hurry and help me! 3
2 May those who are trying to take my life
be embarrassed and ashamed! 4
May those who want to harm me
be turned back and ashamed! 5
3 May those who say, “Aha! Aha!”
be driven back 6 and disgraced! 7
4 May all those who seek you be happy and rejoice in you!
May those who love to experience 8 your deliverance say continually, 9
“May God 10 be praised!” 11
5 I am oppressed and needy! 12
O God, hurry to me! 13
You are my helper and my deliverer!
O Lord, 14 do not delay!
71 In you, O Lord, I have taken shelter!
Never let me be humiliated!
2 Vindicate me by rescuing me! 1
Listen to me! 2 Deliver me! 3
3 Be my protector and refuge, 4
a stronghold where I can be safe! 5
For you are my high ridge 6 and my stronghold.
4 My God, rescue me from the power 7 of the wicked,
from the hand of the cruel oppressor!
5 For you give me confidence, 8 O Lord;
O Lord, I have trusted in you since I was young. 9
6 I have leaned on you since birth; 10
you pulled me 11 from my mother’s womb.
I praise you continually. 12
7 Many are appalled when they see me, 13
but you are my secure shelter.
8 I praise you constantly
and speak of your splendor all day long. 14
9 Do not reject me in my old age! 15
When my strength fails, do not abandon me!
10 For my enemies talk about me;
those waiting for a chance to kill me plot my demise. 16
11 They say, 17 “God has abandoned him.
Run and seize him, for there is no one who will rescue him!”
12 O God, do not remain far away from me!
My God, hurry and help me! 18
13 May my accusers be humiliated and defeated!
May those who want to harm me 19 be covered with scorn and disgrace!
14 As for me, I will wait continually,
and will continue to praise you. 20
15 I will tell about your justice,
and all day long proclaim your salvation, 21
though I cannot fathom its full extent. 22
16 I will come and tell about 23 the mighty acts of the sovereign Lord.
I will proclaim your justice – yours alone.
17 O God, you have taught me since I was young,
and I am still declaring 24 your amazing deeds.
18 Even when I am old and gray, 25
O God, do not abandon me,
until I tell the next generation about your strength,
and those coming after me about your power. 26
19 Your justice, O God, extends to the skies above; 27
you have done great things. 28
O God, who can compare to you? 29
20 Though you have allowed me to experience much trouble and distress, 30
revive me once again! 31
Bring me up once again 32 from the depths of the earth!
21 Raise me to a position of great honor! 33
Turn and comfort me! 34
22 I will express my thanks to you with a stringed instrument,
praising 35 your faithfulness, O my God!
I will sing praises to you accompanied by a harp,
O Holy One of Israel! 36
23 My lips will shout for joy! Yes, 37 I will sing your praises!
I will praise you when you rescue me! 38
24 All day long my tongue will also tell about your justice,
for those who want to harm me 39 will be embarrassed and ashamed. 40
72 For 1 Solomon.
O God, grant the king the ability to make just decisions! 2
Grant the king’s son 3 the ability to make fair decisions! 4
2 Then he will judge 5 your people fairly,
and your oppressed ones 6 equitably.
3 The mountains will bring news of peace to the people,
and the hills will announce justice. 7
4 He will defend 8 the oppressed among the people;
he will deliver 9 the children 10 of the poor
and crush the oppressor.
5 People will fear 11 you 12 as long as the sun and moon remain in the sky,
for generation after generation. 13
6 He 14 will descend like rain on the mown grass, 15
like showers that drench 16 the earth. 17
7 During his days the godly will flourish; 18
peace will prevail as long as the moon remains in the sky. 19
8 May he rule 20 from sea to sea, 21
and from the Euphrates River 22 to the ends of the earth!
9 Before him the coastlands 23 will bow down,
and his enemies will lick the dust. 24
10 The kings of Tarshish 25 and the coastlands will offer gifts;
the kings of Sheba 26 and Seba 27 will bring tribute.
11 All kings will bow down to him;
all nations will serve him.
12 For he will rescue the needy 28 when they cry out for help,
and the oppressed 29 who have no defender.
13 He will take pity 30 on the poor and needy;
the lives of the needy he will save.
14 From harm and violence he will defend them; 31
he will value their lives. 32
15 May he live! 33 May they offer him gold from Sheba! 34
May they continually pray for him!
May they pronounce blessings on him all day long! 35
16 May there be 36 an abundance 37 of grain in the earth;
on the tops 38 of the mountains may it 39 sway! 40
May its 41 fruit trees 42 flourish 43 like the forests of Lebanon! 44
May its crops 45 be as abundant 46 as the grass of the earth! 47
17 May his fame endure! 48
May his dynasty last as long as the sun remains in the sky! 49
May they use his name when they formulate their blessings! 50
May all nations consider him to be favored by God! 51
18 The Lord God, the God of Israel, deserves praise! 52
He alone accomplishes amazing things! 53
19 His glorious name deserves praise 54 forevermore!
May his majestic splendor 55 fill the whole earth!
We agree! We agree! 56
