39 For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of David.
I decided, 1 “I will watch what I say
and make sure I do not sin with my tongue. 2
I will put a muzzle over my mouth
while in the presence of an evil man.” 3
2 I was stone silent; 4
I held back the urge to speak. 5
My frustration grew; 6
3 my anxiety intensified. 7
As I thought about it, I became impatient. 8
Finally I spoke these words: 9
4 “O Lord, help me understand my mortality
and the brevity of life! 10
Let me realize how quickly my life will pass! 11
5 Look, you make my days short-lived, 12
and my life span is nothing from your perspective. 13
Surely all people, even those who seem secure, are nothing but vapor. 14
6 Surely people go through life as mere ghosts. 15
Surely they accumulate worthless wealth
without knowing who will eventually haul it away.” 16
7 But now, O Lord, upon what am I relying?
You are my only hope! 17
8 Deliver me from all my sins of rebellion!
Do not make me the object of fools’ insults!
9 I am silent and cannot open my mouth
because of what you have done. 18
10 Please stop wounding me! 19
You have almost beaten me to death! 20
11 You severely discipline people for their sins; 21
like a moth you slowly devour their strength. 22
Surely all people are a mere vapor. (Selah)
12 Hear my prayer, O Lord!
Listen to my cry for help!
Do not ignore my sobbing! 23
For I am dependent on you, like one residing outside his native land;
I am at your mercy, just as all my ancestors were. 24
13 Turn your angry gaze away from me, so I can be happy
before I pass away. 25
40 For the music director; By David, a psalm.
I relied completely 1 on the Lord,
and he turned toward me
and heard my cry for help.
2 He lifted me out of the watery pit, 2
out of the slimy mud. 3
He placed my feet on a rock
and gave me secure footing. 4
3 He gave me reason to sing a new song, 5
praising our God. 6
May many see what God has done,
so that they might swear allegiance to him and trust in the Lord! 7
4 How blessed 8 is the one 9 who trusts in the Lord 10
and does not seek help from 11 the proud or from liars! 12
5 O Lord, my God, you have accomplished many things;
you have done amazing things and carried out your purposes for us. 13
No one can thwart you! 14
I want to declare them and talk about them,
but they are too numerous to recount! 15
6 Receiving sacrifices and offerings are not your primary concern. 16
You make that quite clear to me! 17
You do not ask for burnt sacrifices and sin offerings.
7 Then I say,
“Look! I come!
What is written in the scroll pertains to me. 18
8 I want to do what pleases you, 19 my God.
Your law dominates my thoughts.” 20
9 I have told the great assembly 21 about your justice. 22
Look! I spare no words! 23
O Lord, you know this is true.
10 I have not failed to tell about your justice; 24
I spoke about your reliability and deliverance;
I have not neglected to tell the great assembly about your loyal love and faithfulness. 25
11 O Lord, you do not withhold 26 your compassion from me.
May your loyal love and faithfulness continually protect me! 27
12 For innumerable dangers 28 surround me.
My sins overtake me
so I am unable to see;
they outnumber the hairs of my head
so my strength fails me. 29
13 Please be willing, O Lord, to rescue me!
O Lord, hurry and help me! 30
14 May those who are trying to snatch away my life
be totally embarrassed and ashamed! 31
May those who want to harm me
be turned back and ashamed! 32
15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
be humiliated 33 and disgraced! 34
16 May all those who seek you be happy and rejoice in you!
May those who love to experience 35 your deliverance say continually, 36
“May the Lord be praised!” 37
17 I am oppressed and needy! 38
May the Lord pay attention to me! 39
You are my helper and my deliverer!
O my God, do not delay!
41 For the music director; a psalm of David.
How blessed 1 is the one who treats the poor properly! 2
When trouble comes, 3 the Lord delivers him. 4
2 May the Lord protect him and save his life! 5
May he be blessed 6 in the land!
Do not turn him over 7 to his enemies! 8
3 The Lord supports 9 him on his sickbed;
you completely heal him from his illness. 10
4 As for me, I said: 11
“O Lord, have mercy on me!
Heal me, for I have sinned against you!
5 My enemies ask this cruel question about me, 12
‘When will he finally die and be forgotten?’ 13
6 When someone comes to visit, 14 he pretends to be friendly; 15
he thinks of ways to defame me, 16
and when he leaves he slanders me. 17
7 All who hate me whisper insults about me to one another; 18
they plan ways to harm me.
8 They say, 19
‘An awful disease 20 overwhelms him, 21
and now that he is bed-ridden he will never recover.’ 22
9 Even my close friend 23 whom I trusted,
he who shared meals with me, has turned against me. 24
10 As for you, O Lord, have mercy on me and raise me up,
so I can pay them back!” 25
11 By this 26 I know that you are pleased with me,
for my enemy does 27 not triumph 28 over me.
12 As for me, you uphold 29 me because of my integrity; 30
you allow 31 me permanent access to your presence. 32
13 The Lord God of Israel deserves praise 33
in the future and forevermore! 34
We agree! We agree! 35
