36 For the music director; written by the Lord’s servant, David; an oracle. 1
An evil man is rebellious to the core. 2
He does not fear God, 3
2 for he is too proud
to recognize and give up his sin. 4
3 The words he speaks are sinful and deceitful;
he does not care about doing what is wise and right. 5
4 He plans ways to sin while he lies in bed;
he is committed to a sinful lifestyle; 6
he does not reject what is evil. 7
5 O Lord, your loyal love reaches to the sky; 8
your faithfulness to the clouds. 9
6 Your justice is like the highest mountains, 10
your fairness like the deepest sea;
you preserve 11 mankind and the animal kingdom. 12
7 How precious 13 is your loyal love, O God!
The human race finds shelter under your wings. 14
8 They are filled with food from your house,
and you allow them to drink from the river of your delicacies.
9 For you are the one who gives
and sustains life. 15
10 Extend 16 your loyal love to your faithful followers, 17
and vindicate 18 the morally upright! 19
11 Do not let arrogant men overtake me,
or let evil men make me homeless! 20
12 I can see the evildoers! They have fallen! 21
They have been knocked down and are unable to get up! 22
37 By David.
Do not fret 1 when wicked men seem to succeed! 2
Do not envy evildoers!
2 For they will quickly dry up like grass,
and wither away like plants. 3
3 Trust in the Lord and do what is right!
Settle in the land and maintain your integrity! 4
4 Then you will take delight in the Lord, 5
and he will answer your prayers. 6
5 Commit your future to the Lord! 7
Trust in him, and he will act on your behalf. 8
6 He will vindicate you in broad daylight,
and publicly defend your just cause. 9
7 Wait patiently for the Lord! 10
Wait confidently 11 for him!
Do not fret over the apparent success of a sinner, 12
a man who carries out wicked schemes!
8 Do not be angry and frustrated! 13
Do not fret! That only leads to trouble!
9 Wicked men 14 will be wiped out, 15
but those who rely on the Lord are the ones who will possess the land. 16
10 Evil men will soon disappear; 17
you will stare at the spot where they once were, but they will be gone. 18
11 But the oppressed will possess the land
and enjoy great prosperity. 19
12 Evil men plot against the godly 20
and viciously attack them. 21
13 The Lord laughs in disgust 22 at them,
for he knows that their day is coming. 23
14 Evil men draw their swords
and prepare their bows,
to bring down 24 the oppressed and needy,
and to slaughter those who are godly. 25
15 Their swords will pierce 26 their own hearts,
and their bows will be broken.
16 The little bit that a godly man owns is better than
the wealth of many evil men, 27
17 for evil men will lose their power, 28
but the Lord sustains 29 the godly.
18 The Lord watches over the innocent day by day 30
and they possess a permanent inheritance. 31
19 They will not be ashamed when hard times come; 32
when famine comes they will have enough to eat. 33
20 But 34 evil men will die;
the Lord’s enemies will be incinerated 35 –
they will go up in smoke. 36
21 Evil men borrow, but do not repay their debt,
but the godly show compassion and are generous. 37
22 Surely 38 those favored by the Lord 39 will possess the land,
but those rejected 40 by him will be wiped out. 41
23 The Lord grants success to the one
whose behavior he finds commendable. 42
24 Even if 43 he trips, he will not fall headlong, 44
for the Lord holds 45 his hand.
25 I was once young, now I am old.
I have never seen a godly man abandoned,
or his children 46 forced to search for food. 47
26 All day long he shows compassion and lends to others, 48
and his children 49 are blessed.
27 Turn away from evil! Do what is right! 50
Then you will enjoy lasting security. 51
28 For the Lord promotes 52 justice,
and never abandons 53 his faithful followers.
They are permanently secure, 54
but the children 55 of evil men are wiped out. 56
29 The godly will possess the land
and will dwell in it permanently.
30 The godly speak wise words
and promote justice. 57
31 The law of their God controls their thinking; 58
their 59 feet do not slip.
32 Evil men set an ambush for the godly
and try to kill them. 60
33 But the Lord does not surrender the godly,
or allow them to be condemned in a court of law. 61
34 Rely 62 on the Lord! Obey his commands! 63
Then he will permit you 64 to possess the land;
you will see the demise of evil men. 65
35 I have seen ruthless evil men 66
growing in influence, like a green tree grows in its native soil. 67
36 But then one passes by, and suddenly they have disappeared! 68
I looked for them, but they could not be found.
37 Take note of the one who has integrity! Observe the godly! 69
For the one who promotes peace has a future. 70
38 Sinful rebels are totally destroyed; 71
evil men have no future. 72
39 But the Lord delivers the godly; 73
he protects them in times of trouble. 74
40 The Lord helps them and rescues them;
he rescues them from evil men and delivers them, 75
for they seek his protection.
38 A psalm of David, written to get God’s attention. 1
O Lord, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger!
Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! 2
2 For your arrows pierce 3 me,
and your hand presses me down. 4
3 My whole body is sick because of your judgment; 5
I am deprived of health because of my sin. 6
4 For my sins overwhelm me; 7
like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear.
5 My wounds 8 are infected and starting to smell, 9
because of my foolish sins. 10
6 I am dazed 11 and completely humiliated; 12
all day long I walk around mourning.
7 For I am overcome with shame 13
and my whole body is sick. 14
8 I am numb with pain and severely battered; 15
I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. 16
9 O Lord, you understand my heart’s desire; 17
my groaning is not hidden from you.
10 My heart beats quickly;
my strength leaves me;
I can hardly see. 18
11 Because of my condition, 19 even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; 20
my neighbors stand far away. 21
12 Those who seek my life try to entrap me; 22
those who want to harm me speak destructive words;
all day long they say deceitful things.
13 But I am like a deaf man – I hear nothing;
I am like a mute who cannot speak. 23
14 I am like a man who cannot hear
and is incapable of arguing his defense. 24
15 Yet 25 I wait for you, O Lord!
You will respond, O Lord, my God!
16 I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; 26
when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. 27
17 For I am about to stumble,
and I am in constant pain. 28
18 Yes, 29 I confess my wrongdoing,
and I am concerned about my sins.
19 But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; 30
those who hate me without cause outnumber me. 31
20 They repay me evil for the good I have done;
though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. 32
21 Do not abandon me, O Lord!
My God, do not remain far away from me!
22 Hurry and help me, 33 O Lord, my deliverer!
