42 Then Job answered the Lord:
2 “I know that you can do all things;
no purpose of yours can be thwarted;
3 you asked, 1
‘Who is this who darkens counsel
But 2 I have declared without understanding 3
things too wonderful for me to know. 4
4 You said, 5
‘Pay attention, and I will speak;
I will question you, and you will answer me.’
5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye has seen you. 6
6 Therefore I despise myself, 7
and I repent in dust and ashes!
VII. The Epilogue (42:7-17)
7 After the Lord had spoken these things to Job, he 8 said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My anger is stirred up 9 against you and your two friends, because you have not spoken about me what is right, 10 as my servant Job has. 8 So now take 11 seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job will intercede 12 for you, and I will respect him, 13 so that I do not deal with you 14 according to your folly, 15 because you have not spoken about me what is right, as my servant Job has.” 16
9 So they went, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and did just as the Lord had told them; and the Lord had respect for Job. 17
10 So the Lord 18 restored what Job had lost 19 after he prayed for his friends, 20 and the Lord doubled 21 all that had belonged to Job. 11 So they came to him, all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they dined 22 with him in his house. They comforted him and consoled him for all the trouble the Lord had brought on him, and each one gave him a piece of silver 23 and a gold ring. 24
12 So the Lord blessed the second part of Job’s life more than the first. He had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons 25 and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah, 26 the second Keziah, 27 and the third Keren-Happuch. 28 15 Nowhere in all the land could women be found who were as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance alongside their brothers.
16 After this Job lived 140 years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so Job died, old and full of days.
Psalm 1 1
1 How blessed 2 is the one 3 who does not follow 4 the advice 5 of the wicked, 6
or stand in the pathway 7 with sinners,
or sit in the assembly 8 of scoffers! 9
2 Instead 10 he finds pleasure in obeying the Lord’s commands; 11
he meditates on 12 his commands 13 day and night.
3 He is like 14 a tree planted by flowing streams; 15
it 16 yields 17 its fruit at the proper time, 18
and its leaves never fall off. 19
He succeeds in everything he attempts. 20
4 Not so with the wicked!
Instead 21 they are like wind-driven chaff. 22
5 For this reason 23 the wicked cannot withstand 24 judgment, 25
nor can sinners join the assembly of the godly. 26
6 Certainly 27 the Lord guards the way of the godly, 28
but the way of the wicked ends in destruction. 29
2 Why 2 do the nations rebel? 3
Why 4 are the countries 5 devising 6 plots that will fail? 7
2 The kings of the earth 8 form a united front; 9
the rulers collaborate 10
against the Lord and his anointed king. 11
3 They say, 12 “Let’s tear off the shackles they’ve put on us! 13
Let’s free ourselves from 14 their ropes!”
4 The one enthroned 15 in heaven laughs in disgust; 16
the Lord taunts 17 them.
5 Then he angrily speaks to them
and terrifies them in his rage, 18 saying, 19
6 “I myself 20 have installed 21 my king
on Zion, my holy hill.”
7 The king says, 22 “I will announce the Lord’s decree. He said to me: 23
‘You are my son! 24 This very day I have become your father!
8 Ask me,
and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, 25
the ends of the earth as your personal property.
9 You will break them 26 with an iron scepter; 27
you will smash them like a potter’s jar!’” 28
10 So now, you kings, do what is wise; 29
you rulers of the earth, submit to correction! 30
11 Serve 31 the Lord in fear!
Repent in terror! 32
12 Give sincere homage! 33
Otherwise he 34 will be angry, 35
and you will die because of your behavior, 36
when his anger quickly ignites. 37
How blessed 38 are all who take shelter in him! 39
